HISTORY The history of this town is closely related to the geographical configuration of the land it lies on, which led to conflict and battles between those who recognized its beauty and desired to possess it. Numerous remains of ancient pile dwellings have been found in various spots throughout the territory of Castelnuovo del Garda. The area was settled by the Umbrians, who lived by herding sheep, spinning, weaving, and tanning leather. The earliest towns sprang up to the south of Lake Garda, and one of these was known as a "Castra", the name for a Roman army camp. A watchtower was erected on a hilltop called Monte Alto in the second century B.C. by Roman Consul Marius when he made war against the Umbrians. In 1370, the entire territory of Verona was conquered by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, lord of Milan. When he died in 1405, the land became part of the Venetian Republic. Castelnuovo was struck by the plague in 1630, and the population of the town dropped from 1130 inhabitants to 387. When Napoleon first marched into Italy, he stayed in the old Angelini building. In 1848, only a few days from the firstWar of Independence when the Savoyard army, encouraged by its victory at Goito, was advancing along the Mincio River and preparing to take the fortress of Peschiera, Castelnuovo was occupied by Luciano Manara and his troops in defense of Peschiera. The Austrian general Thurn und Taxis sent his troops to destroy the town. Almost all the houses were burned, and a large number of inhabitants were massacred, including women, the elderly, and children. The town was called Castelnuovo di Verona from 1867 to 1970. The name was changed to Castelnuovo del Garda because the municipal territory includes a thin strip of land right on the lakeshore. It is possible to swim in the lake at the Campanello and Ronchi beaches. |
